Experience a Symphony of Color and Movement at New England Botanic Garden

This summer, prepare to be mesmerized as New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill unveils an outdoor aerial art installation unlike any other. From June 22 through October 31, visitors can immerse themselves in Flora in Flight, a trilogy of large-scale kinetic artworks by renowned artist Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics. These vibrant, ultra-lightweight installations will transform the Garden into living tapestries of color, creating an immersive and wondrous experience for all.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring the unique work of Patrick Shearn and Poetic Kinetics to the Garden,” says Lea Morgan, exhibitions manager for New England Botanic Garden. “It’s been a joy to see this beautiful, immense project come to life and to collaborate with such a talented and thoughtful group of artists.”inspiration from the Garden’s rich environment, with color palettes and designs reflecting the surrounding flora and landscape.

Inspired by Nature, Designed for the Garden

Flora in Flight was created specifically for New England Botanic Garden and is part of Poetic Kinetics’ Skynet Art Series, which has exhibited worldwide. Each piece in this trilogy draws inspiration from the Garden’s rich environment, with color palettes and designs reflecting the surrounding flora and landscape.

The Hidden Gem: A magical discovery hinted at by flashes of color from the formal space of the great lawn, inviting visitors into an intimate space. (865 sqft)
The Courtyard: A dynamic artwork designed to catch the wind and rise dramatically, reflecting the floral landscaping below. (1152 sqft)
Pliny’s Allee: A whimsical pathway with a colorful tease at the far end, luring visitors into a unique experience centered around a circular fountain. (1300 sqft)

The Artist Behind the Magic

Patrick Shearn, the founder and creative director of Poetic Kinetics, is globally known for his epic festival art installations, immersive public art, and fine art museum displays. Growing up in Colorado Springs, Shearn began his career in the film industry, working on special and visual effects for films like Jurassic Park, Fight Club, and Interview with the Vampire. Today, his art explores human connection, emotion, and our relationship with the natural world.

“When visitors encounter my work, they step into a realm where art merges with nature, responding dynamically to the environment. As they walk through installations like Flora in Flight, they will see vast, fluid canvases of color, constantly in motion, dancing with the wind,” Shearn explains. “I hope Flora in Flight instills a sense of wonder, ignites imagination, and fosters a moment of connection with the natural world.”
